A magazine spread built around a single number, to learn that layout is an argument about what someone reads first.

Seven hundred goals, and the spread has about two seconds to tell you that before you turn the page.

The brief was an editorial spread and a matching poster. I took the story of Ronaldo reaching 700 club goals and built the whole typographic hierarchy around that one figure, because the number is the story and everything else on the page is context. Manager quotes sit at secondary weight, the body copy runs in one measured column, and the poster strips it back to the figure alone.

What I actually learned was hierarchy. Nobody reads a spread, they scan it in an order that you either chose for them or left to chance, and every type size is a decision about that order.

Four years later I am making the same argument with a route diagram instead of a footballer.
