Product at Dye & Durham

Dye and Durham builds software for legal and business professionals, which is a category where the users have very little patience for anything clever.

I worked on the product side of eCore across the fall term, on digital transformation and risk workflows. Legal tech is a good teacher because the constraints are real and non negotiable. A workflow either satisfies a compliance requirement or it doesn’t, and no amount of good interface design gets you around that.

What I took from it is how much of product work is translation. Between what a regulation requires, what an engineer can build this quarter, and what the person doing the job at 4pm on a Friday will actually tolerate.
